Moving is a huge undertaking and it can be very stressful. You need to organise all the things you own. Our moving house checklist here covers all those pesky details. Pack them up! Get your furniture ready for moving day. Then unpack everything again when you're at your new place. It's no wonder that so many people are hesitant about moving! In this blog post, we have compiled an extensive and essential moving house checklist for you. Here is our most comprehensive moving house checklist that will make moving a lot easier for you. You can also find more information on what to do when moving house in our Moving In To Your New Rental Home article

All the Essentials that you Need to Know Before Moving In

1. Pack Your Belongings While Moving

Pack your belongings in boxes and mark them in their corresponding rooms. Example: Living Room, Bedroom etc. This will make unpacking a lot easier when you're at your new home!Label the moving cartons so they are easy to identify as belonging to different rooms of the house. You can use labels or masking tape on one side of the box and then write what's inside each box on it. If there is something that belongs outside like plants. take out those items first before unpacking anything else if possible. Moving companies charge by weight too. So this helps conserve space in any given vehicle for other things you might need later on. During move day such as furniture pieces from another room in your home.

2.Get a Goodnight Sleep Before Moving

Woman sleeping with sleep mask.

Head to bed early the night before your move. The last thing you want is to feel tired on your moving day and have a headache all day long! Make sure that the room where you sleep has some of your favourite things in it. Like pillows or blankets - this will make it easier for you! Also, try not to overpack on the week leading up to moving day (or at least pack light). You don't want any extra heavy objects weighing down an already full house with more boxes. If there's something bulky but doesn't take up too much space like shoes or clothes. Get rid of those items while packing so they're out of sight when moving day comes around. It'll save lots of time unpacking later.

3. Eat a Hearty Breakfast to Give You Energy For The Day Ahead

Get up early and have a nice, hearty breakfast to give you the energy you'll need for moving day. It's best to eat food that is not too high in sugar or fat. As they may make your mood drop - so stick with something like an egg sandwich on whole wheat bread! The cereal will do just fine if it's all you can eat in the morning before coffee breakfast is the most important meal of the day so you should give importance especially on moving day. As it is also hard work and you need to stay energised throughout. But this moving house checklist should help prepare things to go when moving day arrives.

4. Gather all Moving Supplies and Tools

Make sure to grab any boxes you might need - such as packing paper, tape, labels or bubble wrap. You'll also need a good pair of scissors for the unboxing process when it's finally time! There are lots of things that can go wrong when moving house. But don't worry! Because this moving house checklist should help make everything much simpler.

5. Label Each Box With its Contents - Also Where to Unpack

This is to ensure that the boxes are not mixed up during packing. So they'll reach their destination easily without any mishaps. For example, "Kitchen Items" can mean all of your pots and pans. Along with plates or utensils or anything else in the kitchen drawers. It's important to pack a list!Label each box with its contents as well as where you should unpack it. This labelling system will help avoid confusion when moving day arrives.

6. Arrange for Transportation

This is a job for the moving company or individual to take care of, and it's worth contacting at least two companies.Arrange for transportation before moving day arrives. By either hiring movers or arranging for your own vehicle transport. The last thing that you want to do on moving day is to spend hours searching around. To find out who will provide this service. Include one list prepared ahead of time which includes all

7. Get Rid of Unwanted Furniture

Donate furniture to charity or have it refurbished. Consider investing in a few pieces of new furnishings. Which will make moving day much easier on both you and your family members.A lot of people believe that moving is an expensive process. But this isn't always the case if you take certain steps beforehand! You can save money by donating unwanted items to charities. For example; You do not need to bring them with you. Especially when you are transporting your belongings from one location to another. It's also worth checking out some different stores online before the move takes place. So that you know exactly what type of furniture would suit each room best.

8. Take out All The Trash, Recycling and Compost

One of the essential things to do before moving is sorting out all your trash. Sort out the broken or damaged items, if any. Or the things that just don't work anymore. You should also be aware that you can recycle and compost certain materials.

9. Clean Your Fridge of Leftovers or Perishables Before You Go

It's always worth giving your fridge a good clean before you move. This includes removing any perishables and leftovers from the fridge. So that they don't go off while moving, or cleaning out all the leftover foods in there. Make room for anything else you're going to take with you once it arrives at its new home!

10. Vacuum Everywhere Carpet floor Furniture

Before you start packing up your carpets, it's always worth giving them a good vacuum. This includes the furniture too. And don't forget to give any mattresses or cushions that might be lying around on the floor a quick vacuuming!

11. Disconnect Appliances that Will Be Staying Behind

It's always worth disconnecting any appliances that are staying behind. By doing so, you can avoid an unnecessary electricity bill, or for safety reasons. This includes the fridge and freezer if you're moving house. These need a little bit more extra care with them than anything else!

12. Gather All Your small items like Toiletries or Chargers into a Basket or Bag

This is a really good idea to make packing easier, especially if you're moving house. Packing and unpacking for the whole family will be so much less stressful with some little bags like these!

13. Pack up Clothes and Bedding first. Move on to larger items last

Moving house can be really stressful, so it's important to pack the clothes and bedding first. Move on to kitchenware, bookshelves, and other large items at the end. This will mean that you're well prepared for moving day - no last-minute panics!

14. Keep an Inventory of Your Belongings

A great moving house checklist tip is to keep a list of your belongings. This way, you'll know what items are missing. And can contact the moving company or police if anything goes missing in transit.

15. Label all Boxes with the Room They Belong In

It's really easy to get disorientated when moving house. Labelling all of your boxes before you pack them will make it so much easier for the movers. And means that you can be able to unpack everything in no time!

16. Pack Clothes in Suitcase or Plastic Bags

You must pack some essentials like underwear, socks, tights and shoes in your suitcase. Or plastic bags for moving day - that way you'll have everything you need once you arrive!

17. Who's Doing the Packing?

A lot of people think that it's a good idea for one person to do all the packing and unpacking. However, this can cause major tension between you and your moving company! You don't want to be there with them while they're carrying heavy items up flights of stairs. Rather stay at home until you can make sure everything is where it needs to go. So you'll have more energy on moving day.

18. Things to Take into Consideration

If you're moving to a home with different floorings, such as tiles or wood floors. Then it's best that your movers wear shoes that are easy to slip on and off. You may also want to be careful of furniture legs so they don't scratch up the new floor!

19. Have your Mails Delivered to your New Address

Before moving day, make sure you have provided a new mail address for your important mails. This includes any bills or statements to avoid a late fee.

20. Don't Forget Important Documents

It's important to have a list of any documents you'll need for the move. This includes license, passport, social security card. Plus, bank statements if moving out-of-country or across state lines.

21. Start Packing at Least a Month In Advance

Start packing at least a month in advance. So that you have a lot of time for sorting the items by what needs to go first on moving day. And deciding what boxes need which labels for where they're going (e.g., kitchen/bathroom). Keep all fragile items packed separately. You can bubble wrap, foam peanuts, airbags or other cushioning materials inside each box. So it's less likely those belongings will break while moving from one place to another. If bumped against something!

22. Make Sure to Have Someone Help You Move

If possible, make sure to have someone help you move. It can be a friend or family member. Someone who is able and willing to assist with moving day tasks. E.g., packing boxes as well as the actual physical moving of furniture from one place in your home to another.

23. Decide on a Best Moving Date and Time For You and Your Family

Choose a date and time that works for you. You'll need to decide on the best moving day. Which may be sooner or later than what your friends are doing depending on how much stuff you have. For example, if other people in your town are moving around Christmas time. Then it's probably not the best idea to move during this busy season. Because it will cause more stress and additional costs with different rental prices. Especially, when there is an increase in demand.

24. Make Sure to Turn off Gas/Electricity if Necessary

Before emptying your space. Make sure to turn off gas and electricity if required. So that the utility company doesn't charge you for a service you don't use.

25. Move-In One Room at a time

Move-in one room at a time, this will make moving easier and you'll be less stressed. Don't try to do everything at once! It's best to do it all over the course of two weeks if your house is big enough. This way you can spread out the work and not feel overwhelmed or exhausted by trying to move everything in one day.

26. Find Someone To Look After Your Pet While You Move in

If you have a pet, make sure to find someone who will look after them while you're moving.Otherwise, it's likely your furry friend would get pretty upset. Especially when they can't follow their favourite humans around the house. It could also lead to an escape attempt that only adds stress for everyone involved in the move.

27. Make Sure You Have Enough Boxes and Packing Tape

It's also important to make sure you have enough boxes and packing tape for the move. You don't want to see a pile of things that are still waiting to go into place. Or worse! Running out of time because you can't find any more items! Make sure your moving company is bringing plenty as well so they're not affected by this issue either.
