Between Wandsworth and Clapham Commons, the south London thorough-fare that is Northcote Road runs for almost half a mile from the busy crossroads at Battersea Rise, close to Clapham Junction station, to Broomwood Road at the southern end. The neat perpendicular tree-lined roads of Victoriana rise up from Northcote Road on either side leading to two of the area’s most popular commons. There are two large parks - Clapham Common and Wandsworth Common at a short distance There’s a gentle buzz of urban suburbia to Northcote Road which during the day is a hive of activity with mums and nannies, their charges in tow, doing the school run, shopping at the famous market stalls selling warm bread, freshly caught fish and delicious homemade pizzas or visiting their favourite café. The enclave’s popularity with young families, flocking to the area for the excellent schools Belleville and Honeywell primaries at its heart, has given it the affectionate nicknames of “Nappy Valley” and “Pram Springs”. However, at night time it takes on an altogether more sophisticated air as the many bars and restaurants quickly fill up with the young professional residents, straight off the train from the City or West End, who rent or have bought their first flat nearby. Buses to Sloane Square remind residents how close they are to the centre. Northcote Road’s historic food market dates back to the 1860s, when it provided locals with fruit and vegetable stalls to complement the original 13 butcher shops, five fishmongers and several pawn-brokers and it was the only parade of shops in the area with an outdoor market every Saturday. Following a decline in the 1990s, the area has seen a surge in popularity in the last decade with an upturn in support for local businesses from members of the community. Now flower stalls, craftspeople and vintage clothes stores rub up against grocery stores, particularly on Fridays and Saturdays.
